American Pharoah lived up to the pre-race billing in Kentucky Derby 141, scoring by a length as the 5-2 favorite among 18 runners. Breaking from post 15, American Pharoah became the first champion 2-year-old to win the Kentucky Derby since Street Sense in 2007 and would go on to become the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years with convincing victories in the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.

American Pharoah provided owner/breeder Zayat Stables with their first Kentucky Derby win. Zayat had finished second three times previously via Nehro (2011), Bodemeister (2012) and Pioneerof the Nile (2009), the latter being the freshman sire of American Pharoah.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert notched his fourth Kentucky Derby triumph, moving into a three-way tie with D. Wayne Lukas and Henry Thompson for second-most behind the legendary Ben Jones, who captured six Kentucky Derby trophies. Jockey Victor Espinoza, who also guided 2014 hero California Chrome, registered his third victory in the first leg of the Triple Crown.

American Pharoah finished fifth when making his career debut but brought a four-race, stakes-winning streaking into the Kentucky Derby, opening the 2015 season with convincing tallies in the Rebel Stakes (G2) and Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park. He tracked the pace in third at Churchill Downs before being given his cue on the far turn and determinedly wore down Firing Line and Dortmund to win going away under the wire, completing the 1 ¼-mile distance in 2:03.02.

Firing Line easily held second by two lengths, with Dortmund staving off the late rally of Forsted by a neck in third.

Danzig Moon wound up fifth and was followed under the finish line by Materiality, Keen Ice, Mubtaahij, Itsaknockout, Carpe Diem, Frammento, Bolo, Mr. Z, Ocho Ocho Ocho, Far Right, War Story, Tencendur and Upstart.
