In the last decade, the Kentucky Derby has yielded some of the most memorable performances, both equine and human, in the race’s long history.
Mine That Bird (2009) lit up the tote board at 50-1, while jockey Calvin Borel won the Derby three times in four years with Street Sense (2007), Mine That Bird, and Super Saver (2010).
The ill-fated Barbaro (2006) turned in a magical performance to win by 6 1/2 lengths, the biggest margin of victory in the Derby since 1948.
Orb’s (2013) victory provided Hall of Fame trainer and Kentucky native Shug McGaughey, and the Phipps family, noted patrons of the turf for nearly a century, with their first ever win in the Kentucky Derby.
Big Brown (2008), I’ll Have Another (2011), California Chrome (2014), and American Pharoah (2015) all backed up their Derby wins by taking the Preakness two weeks later. American Pharoah also won the Belmont Stakes, becoming the first horse in 37 years to sweep the Triple Crown.
