American Pharoah's quest for Triple Crown glory continued in the 140th Preakness Stakes on May 16, just two weeks after his one-length victory in the 141st Kentucky Derby. The Bob Baffert-trained colt garnered plenty of support in the 1 3/16-mile race, being sent off the near even-money favorite, but the weather was not on his side in the second jewel of the Triple Crown.
Thunder rumbled and torrential rain poured from the sky just as the call for "Riders Up!" came at Pimlico. The deluge continued as the eight-horse field paraded before the waterlogged stands, only letting up in time for the runners to enter the gate. However, the damage had already been done in the form of a sloppy track.
In the end, none of it mattered to American Pharoah, who sloshed home on the front end to record a romping seven-length triumph. The bay son of Pioneerof the Nile stopped the clock in 1:58.46.
Tale of Verve followed in second while Divining Rod took third another length back. It was 7 1/2 lengths behind to American Pharoah's stablemate Dortmund in fourth. Completing the order of finish were Mr. Z, Danzig Moon, Firing Line and Bodhisattva.
Although American Pharoah returned to the cheers of his multitude of fans, one of the most iconic images from the 140th Preakness came courtesy of jockey Victor Espinoza when he took off one of his boots, turned it upside down and a stream of water poured out.
